GENDER EQUALITY AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE AMONG COCOA-DEPENDENT HOUSEHOLDS IN GHANA: FARMER WORKSHOP IN SEFWI-JUABOSO
Researchers from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ghana, held a farmer workshop in Sefwi-Juaboso in the Western North Region to share research findings on gender equality and climate resilience among cocoa-dependent households.
The wider research project, implemented in Ghana 🇬🇭, Côte d’Ivoire 🇨🇮 and Liberia 🇱🇷, examined how gender differences in access to productive resources, climate information and decision-making opportunities influence the capacity of cocoa-growing households to prepare for, cope with and recover from climate-related challenges.
The research team, led by Professor Francisco Aguilar of SLU, together with Dr Elizabeth Danso, Dr Mavis Akuffobea and Dr Jewel Andoh of CSIR, presented the findings to cocoa farmers and facilitated discussions on their practical implications.
The engagement also explored strategies for advancing gender equality and strengthening household resilience to the growing impacts of climate change. Particular attention was given to equitable access to land, finance, improved planting materials and climate information; shared household and farm decision-making; and livelihood strategies that can help farming communities adapt to changing climatic conditions.
The discussions reinforced a central message from the research: gender equality is not only a matter of fairness—it is essential to building resilient cocoa-growing households and a more sustainable cocoa sector.
