ESTABLISHING A LAND RESTORATION RESEARCH AND DEMONSTRATION AREA WITHIN DEGRADED MINING SITES IN THE BIBIANI AREAS, GHANA
Project initiated by CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (CSIR-FORIG) seeks to establish a research and demonstration area to provide a science-based resource for educating landowners, foresters, and the public on techniques appropriate for restoration of degraded mining sites.
These research areas would serve as a platform for scientists and land managers to cooperate on the development of innovative approaches to restoration of degraded forests resulting from mining activities; and provide the opportunities for education and debate among policymakers.
The objectives included
- Identify, demarcate a research and demonstration sites/community;
- Establish the socioeconomic and ecological benchmarks for measuring the restoration success after project interventions;
- Test the survival of selected tree species on mined sites and hence their suitability for reclamation of degraded mining sites; and
- Determine the human dimensional factors of galamsey activities and assess willingness to pay (WTP) for restoration initiatives of degraded mining sites for improved forest ecosystem services.
